About the Preeti to Unicode Converter
This page turns Preeti text back into Nepali Unicode. Preeti is a legacy font that maps Nepali shapes onto English letters, so a document typed in Preeti looks like gibberish on any computer without the font installed. Unicode is the encoding the web and modern software use, so converting back means the text can be searched, copied into email, posted online, or opened in Google Docs without any special font.
The converter sits the right way round for this job. Preeti goes in the left pane and Unicode comes out on the right, as you type. Both panes stay editable and in sync, so you can fix a word on either side and the other side follows. The engine reads Preeti keystrokes syllable by syllable, not letter by letter, so the i-matra lands in the right place, reph rides above the right syllable, and half-form conjuncts come back as whole Nepali letters. The same 401 automated conversion checks that cover the Unicode to Preeti direction cover this one too, including round trips in both directions.
Copy the result and paste it anywhere. Unicode Nepali shows with any normal font, so the reader needs nothing installed. For the other direction, use the Unicode to Preeti converteron the homepage. For Kantipur documents, use theKantipur to Unicode converter, which uses the Kantipur mapping. Kantipur and Preeti share most letters but disagree on a handful of bytes, so the wrong converter silently mistranslates those.
How to tell your text is Preeti
Open the document on a computer without the Preeti font and look at what is left. Preeti text shows as English letters with brackets and punctuation mixed in, and the pattern is easy to spot once you have seen it. Words often start with g, d, s or k. The danda at the end of a sentence shows as a full stop. A document full of strings like g]kfn and gd:t] is Preeti text, and it converts cleanly on this page.
Unicode text never looks like that. If the document already shows readable Nepali letters like नेपाल, it is Unicode already and needs no conversion. If it shows English letters that spell nothing, check the font name in the document. A font set to Preeti means the text is Preeti-encoded. A font set to Kantipur means it is Kantipur-encoded, and the Kantipur converter is the right one.
Worked examples: Preeti in, Unicode out
The converter at the top of this page produced these examples. Each one was also converted back, and every one came back as the exact Preeti text it started from.
| Preeti (what you paste) | Unicode (what you copy) | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
g]kfn | नेपाल | plain word |
g]kfnL | नेपाली | ii-matra ending |
gd:t] | नमस्ते | conjunct in the middle |
ls;fg | किसान | i-matra moves right again |
sd{ | कर्म | reph cluster |
Ss | क्क | half + full conjunct |
g]kfn ;/sf/ | नेपाल सरकार | full phrase |
@)*@ | २०८२ | Nepali digits |
The rows worth testing are किसान, कर्म and क्क. A character-by-character converter scrambles all three, because Preeti stores the i-matra to the left of its consonant, the reph above a later syllable, and conjuncts as half form plus full form. This engine puts each one back in Unicode logical order.
What it cannot do
This page converts text, not files. It takes pasted text and plain .txt uploads, and it gives back text. It cannot open a .docx or PDF file, so a Word document has to be opened first and its text copied out. It cannot read a photo or a scan, so a printed page has to be typed out first. Converters that offer .docx and PDF upload do that work on a server. This one keeps everything in your browser, and that trade is the price of the privacy.
English words and digits inside Preeti text also need care. The converter treats every letter as a Preeti keystroke, so Hello comes out as ज्भियि and 2026 comes out as द्दण्द्दट. That is correct behaviour for Preeti text, and wrong for English. Convert only the Nepali parts of a mixed document. Leave English words, names written in English, email addresses and Western digits out, then add them back after the conversion. For a long mixed document, convert one Nepali passage at a time and check each result as you go.
Frequently asked questions
- How to convert Preeti to Unicode?
- Paste your Preeti text into the left pane of the converter above. The Nepali Unicode appears instantly in the right pane as you type. Click "Copy result" and paste the Unicode text anywhere: Gmail, Facebook, WhatsApp, Google Docs or a modern editor. No Preeti font needs to be installed to read the result.
- How do I know my text is Preeti?
- Preeti text looks like broken English when the Preeti font is missing. Words start with letters like g, d, s and k, with brackets and punctuation mixed in. The word for Nepal shows as g]kfn, and namaste shows as gd:t]. If your document looks like that, it is Preeti text, and this page converts it back to readable Nepali.
- Does it handle conjuncts, reph and i-matra?
- Yes. The engine reads Preeti keystrokes syllable by syllable, so the i-matra in ls;fg comes back as किसान, the reph in sd{ comes back as कर्म, and the half-form conjunct in Ss comes back as क्क. Those are the cases where simple converters fail, and they are covered by the same 401 automated conversion checks as the Unicode to Preeti direction.
- Can I convert a .docx or PDF file?
- No. This page converts text you paste or upload as a .txt file. It cannot open .docx or PDF files, and it cannot read text from a photo or scan. For a Word file, copy the Preeti text out of the document and paste it here. For a scanned page, type the text out first. Converters that offer .docx and PDF upload do that work on a server; this one keeps everything in your browser.
- Why did my English words turn into Nepali letters?
- The converter treats every letter as a Preeti keystroke, so English words get mapped to Nepali letters too. Hello comes out as ज्भियि and 2026 comes out as द्दण्द्दट. Convert only the Nepali parts of a mixed document. Leave English words, names in English, email addresses and numbers out, and add them back after.
- Can I convert Preeti to Unicode in Word?
- Copy the Preeti text from your Word document and paste it into the left pane here. Copy the Unicode result from the right pane and paste it back into Word. Word shows Unicode Nepali with any normal font, so no Preeti font is needed once the text is converted.
- Is my text sent to a server?
- No. Conversion happens entirely in your browser and nothing you type is uploaded, stored or logged. The page even keeps working offline once it has loaded, and the source code is open for anyone to inspect.
- What is the difference from the converter on the homepage?
- The homepage converter runs Unicode to Preeti by default, with Preeti to Unicode as its hidden reverse: you paste Preeti into the right pane. This page puts Preeti first, so the panes sit in the direction people actually use for old documents. The engine is the same in both places.
